The Diploma of Nursing offers the perfect starting point to your nursing career, and can also allow you to build on knowledge and skills gained through earlier qualifications. Upon completion of the Diploma of Nursing, you will be eligible to register as an enrolled nurse with the technical skills, clinical expertise and practical experience to advance directly into the nursing workforce. As an enrolled nurse (formally known as a division 2 nurse) you will be able to work in a wide range of nursing settings. These settings include acute care (Hospitals), aged care, mental health, community settings, home care and district & home nursing services.

Clinical placements throughout the Diploma of Nursing course will be arranged for you, which will enable you to experience a number of these health care settings as part of the course.

This course is an excellent pathway into Nursing as you can get work as an enrolled Nurse and continue to study by undertaking the Advanced Diploma of Nursing or move on to the Bachelor of Nursing at University with credits from this course.

Is this course right for you?

While there aren’t any qualification prerequisite requirements to enrol in the Diploma of Nursing, we want to ensure you’re making the right choice for your career progression. We encourage you to ask questions, research the type of tasks undertaken by an Enrolled nurse, and display a passion for the industry.

Numeracy and Literacy requirements

You will need to provide evidence of successful completion of year 12 Maths and English in the past 2 years OR sit a numeracy and literacy entry assessment which is conducted on site at an STA campus.

Student Entry Procedure - for eligible students electing to access VET Student Loans

All students wishing to apply for a Commonwealth VET Student Loan must be assessed for academic suitability to undertake a high level VET qualification.

This academic assessment is in addition to any entry requirements that may be required for the specific course a student wishes to undertake.

The student must:

  • provide a copy of the individual's senior secondary certificate of education from an Australian agency; OR
  • provide evidence of attainment of an Australian Qualification Framework qualification at certificate 4 or above; OR
  • undertake an approved reading and numeracy assessment and meet the required standard. The assessment tool used is either the Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) testing, published by the Australian Council for Educational Research Limited (ACER) or VETASSESS and the student must attain a minimum of ACSF Exit Level 3 in both reading and numeracy.

VET student loans will not be approved for students who do not meet eligibility requirements

A VET student loan gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid

Police Check and Working with Children Check

It is a mandatory requirement of the course that you undertake a Police Check and Working with Children Check. Both of these need to be clear records, and they both need to be obtained prior to your first placement block. These requirements are set as part of the terms of the placement with our preferred placement providers, and will also be a requirement of most Enrolled Nurse positions. Where a student has been identified as having a disclosable outcome, it is up to the student to contact the Nursing manager, should they wish to disclose the outcome and discuss.

Placement is a mandatory requirement of all of our courses failure to undertake placement will result in not passing the course. Obtaining these checks, and any cost associated with applying for them, is your responsibility. They need to be current and must be obtained prior to your first day of placement - they will need to be sighted by your placement supervisor and/or the manager you are reporting to. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please make a time to speak our Nursing manager.

Course Structure

The Diploma of Nursing is made up of 25 units of competency, which you will need to complete to gain the qualification and apply for registration as an Enrolled Nurse.

400 hours of clinical placement will be arranged for you as part of your study.

Study Options

We offer three options for you to study your Diploma of Nursing, with each option giving you different lengths of study:

 

1 day a week – for 3.5 Approx years (Knox campus only)

2 days a week - for 2 years

 

Placement Requirements

Students must attend a total of 10 weeks of unpaid clinical placement in a range of clinical settings. This is arranged by Skills Training Australia, and provided through our clinical partners in the greater Melbourne area.

School Terms

Skills Training Australia follows the Victorian Departments of Education's school terms. Diploma of Nursing students will not be required to attend classes during school holidays.

Accreditation

This course is fully accredited under the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). This course will also give students the option to apply for registration with The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Skills Training Australia is regulated by Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Advanced diploma of Nursing

Higher Education - Bachelor of Nursing pathway

Upon completion of your Diploma of Nursing with Skills Training Australia, you will be able to apply for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing through any university or higher education provider offering this program. When applying to a higher education provider, you may also be eligible to apply for some credits from your Diploma of Nursing.

Tuition Information

Skills Training Australia’s Diploma of Nursing is offered to Victorian domestic students only.

We currently hold a contract with the Victorian State Government to offer subsidised training places to eligible individuals under the Skills First Program; numbers are limited.

You will either be assessed as a Government Subsidised Student or a Full Fee Paying Student.

Skills First Program

$8,500* is the funded tuition fee. The hourly tuition fee calculates to $5.05 per hour.

Full Fee Enrolment

$24,485.20  - this cost is the full tuition fee for the course.

Approximate Skills First Program Contribution

If you are eligible for the Skills First Program, the approximate value of the contribution from the Victorian Government towards the qualification you are considering is $13,112.00.

*Skills Training Australia may use both State and Federal funding, eligibility criteria does apply

Additional Fees

Resources -  Skills Training Australia provides the option for students to purchase directly from JR Medical Books at the time of orientation. Alternatively, students can be supplied with a booklist to purchase the resources from a supplier of their choosing.

JR Medical Books resource cost is $476.35 
(Price current September 2017 - subject to change).

Police Check and Working with Children Check (WWCC) –  Police checks and WWCC are required for students to conduct placement. The cost associated with checks are the responsibility of the student. Applications for both these checks will be conducted at orientation for you to submit.
