Your Community Services career checklist


Community Service and Health industry jobs are the largest and fastest growing employment sector in Australia. A simple search on Community Services brings up 15,000 advertised jobs Australia wide. There is no doubt this is a growing industry, in fact, the Australian Government has the Health Care and Social Assistance sector as the largest share of the projected employment market, with 23.2% of the market share. But finding the right position can be a bit overwhelming. Before you tap into this growing market, first you need to decide if this is a career for you. Check out this post for an insight into Community Service roles. Once you’ve decided this is where you want to head, here are four things you need to consider before making your next move.

1. Choose your training course carefully

Make sure you check out all the course requirements before embarking on a Diploma in Community Services. Does the course fit into your current lifestyle? Will you be able to fulfil the training needs? You need to understand what is required of you before you commit financially and emotionally. Sometimes part-time study sounds appealing when class times fit in around your current job but consider on-the-job training time and coursework. You want to commit yourself 100% to study, so you get the most out of it. 

2. Network with those in the industry

Making the right contacts is vital for career growth. As in any industry, getting your foot in the door can be tricky. There might be numerous positions available, but that doesn't mean you're guaranteed a job at the end of your course. By making the right connections, by being visible and on the right people’s radar, you increase your chances of success and career progression. Your placements are vital for this step. As part of any Diploma, you undertake on-the-job training, known as placements. The quality of these placements varies from training institute to training institute. So when you’re deciding on a course, make sure you check out the list of partners they have, so you can assess if that institute has good connections and can get you into some impressive Social Assistance workplaces.

3. Volunteer whenever possible to get experience

This step is two-fold. By volunteering in your chosen field while you are undertaking your studies, you can connect with industry bodies that could one day be your future employer. But you’re also able to assess different roles and see if they are right for you. Volunteering in a variety of locations allows you to get insights into workplace culture, and also help gain an understanding of the various roles, which can help when it comes time to chose a sector to focus on.

4. Know it’ll be hard work, but a rewarding career

Above all, the main thing to consider is that Community Service roles are hard work. There’s no sugar coating this one! The underlying feeling of a job well done, of helping someone out of a difficult situation, to potentially change lives is one that is not repaid in monetary value. Knowing your working for the ‘greater good’ has to be enough in many circumstances. That is why this is a career for those who are passionate about helping others, who are empathetic and have a desire to do social good. While there might not be many long lunches on the company expense account, there will be the knowledge that you are changing society and helping those that would otherwise slip through the cracks.
